For nearly 25 years, SAP Business Warehouse (BW) has been the pillar of business intelligence for SAP customers. Today, between BW/4HANA, BW Private Cloud Edition (PCE), SAP Datasphere, and now SAP Business Data Cloud, many companies are asking: what is the right direction? Good news: this is not a sudden, overnight replacement. Instead, SAP offers a gradual evolution. Let us decode this roadmap.
Why is SAP evolving its offering?
The data world has profoundly changed. Yesterday, a central data warehouse was enough to produce a few management reports. Today, companies want to connect dozens of data sources (SAP and non-SAP), leverage the cloud, share data across business units, use AI, work with platforms like Databricks or Snowflake, and avoid duplicating data unnecessarily. SAP has therefore gradually evolved its Analytics offering.
SAP Business Warehouse, the enduring veteran
SAP BW (Business Warehouse) is SAP's historical data warehouse platform. Its role is simple:
- collect data from SAP ERP systems,
- transform it,
- consolidate it,
- produce metrics for users.
For years, BW has been the benchmark for large corporations. The problem? The architecture is robust... but also sometimes heavy, highly centralized, and not very open to new cloud use cases. And most importantly, historical versions of SAP BW are gradually reaching the end of maintenance (scheduled by 2030).
SAP BW/4HANA, modernization rather than a revolution
With the arrival of SAP HANA, SAP completely modernized BW. Thus BW/4HANA was born. The objective was not to change the philosophy, but to:
- simplify models,
- remove old historical objects,
- leverage the computing power of HANA,
- improve performance.
BW/4HANA is the "next-generation BW." If your company already has a significant BW asset base, BW/4HANA remains a perfectly relevant solution. Furthermore, SAP guarantees support until 2040, which reassures companies that have invested massively in this platform.
BW PCE... it is NOT a new product
This is probably the concept that creates the most confusion. BW PCE simply means SAP BW or BW/4HANA hosted in SAP's private cloud (Private Cloud Edition). In other words, it is not a new BW, it is not a new technology, it is the same software, but operated as a managed service by SAP.
Why is this interesting? Because many companies want to exit their datacenters without having to completely rebuild their decision-making system. BW PCE therefore often constitutes a first modernization step before a broader migration to SAP's cloud solutions.
SAP Datasphere, the new heart of the Data strategy
This is currently SAP's strategic solution. Unlike BW, Datasphere does not seek solely to build a data warehouse. Its ambition is broader: to create an open data platform. In particular, it allows you to:
- connect SAP and non-SAP systems,
- federate data without necessarily moving it,
- share business models,
- collaborate with data teams,
- feed SAP Analytics Cloud, Power BI, or other tools.
In a way, BW organized data, whereas Datasphere seeks to organize the entire company data ecosystem.
What about Business Data Cloud (BDC)?
Since 2025, SAP has positioned SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) as the global layer of its data strategy. It does not replace Datasphere; it encompasses it. BDC can be seen as a suite including in particular:
- SAP Datasphere,
- SAP Analytics Cloud,
- data products,
- AI services,
- integrations with Databricks.
The goal is to offer a complete platform covering data management, sharing, analysis, and intelligent exploitation.
What strategy should you adopt?
There is no universal answer. The best trajectory depends on your SAP landscape, your existing investments, and your ambitions regarding the cloud and data valuation.
You are on classic SAP BW: It is time to anticipate the future. A migration to BW/4HANA or BW Private Cloud Edition (PCE) allows you to modernize your platform while preserving existing developments. It is also an excellent foundation for preparing an opening toward SAP Datasphere.
You are already on BW/4HANA: You have a robust and sustainable platform supported until 2040. The challenge is not to replace BW/4HANA, but to gradually enrich it with the capabilities offered by SAP Datasphere and, ultimately, by SAP Business Data Cloud.
